Affenctionately called murali, Muttiah muralidaran is the first and only tamil of Indian origin to represent Sri lanka in international cricket.muralidaran’s paternal grandfather Periyasami Sinasamy came from south India to work in the tea plantation of central Sri lanka in 1920.Sinasamy later return to India with his daughters and settled in tiruchirapalli but his sons,including Muralidaran’s father remained in Sri lanka.
When he was nine year old Muralidaran was sent to St.Anthony’s college,Kandy where he began his cricketing career under his school coach,Sunil Fernando.he went into play for four years in the school first XI.in his final two seasons at St.Anthonys Colleage he took over one hundred wickets and in 1990/91 was named as the “Bata School Boy Cricketer of the year.
In domestic cricket Muralidaran has played for Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club and Central province.his record has been 234 wickets in 46 matches.he also played country cricket in England, mainly for lanashire and kent.his bowling figures in English domestic cricket are also exceptional 236 wickets in 33 matches.Since his debut in 1992,Muralidaran has taken over 800 test wickets and over 500 one day international wickets,becoming the first player to take 1000 wickets combined in the two main forms of international cricket.
During his first test,playing at the age of 20 at the Keththerama Stadium in Srilanka,Muralidaran claimed 3 for 141.Craig Mcdermott was his first wicket.there was one dismissal which convinced many of Muralidarann’s Special powers:Tom moody’s leg-stump was dislodged when he shouldered arms to a delivery that piched at least two feet outside the off stump.
In July 2007,Muralidaran achieved a career peak Test bowling rating of 920,based on the LG ICC Player player rankings.this is the highest ever rating achieved by a spin bowler in test cricket.he currently holds the highest wickets/match ration(6.1) for any bowler with over 200 test wickets and also represented Srilanka in 118 tests of the 175 that they have played.he also have taken five or more wickets in any innings on 66 occasions in test cricket,which is a world record.
On 12 august 1993 Muralidaran made his first one day international debut against India Praveen Amre was his first ODI wicket.on 27 October 2000 in Sharjah,Muralidaran captured 7 for 30 against India, which were then the best bowling figure in ODI.In 2002,he achieved a career peak ODI Boling rating of 913,based on the LG ICC Player rankings.this is the highest ever rating achieved by a spin bowler in one day internationals.
